English

Through passionate teaching, we aim to inspire an appreciation of a broad and engaging range of texts and ideas. We empower students to develop individual interpretations, and we give them the tools to express those interpretations articulately and thoughtfully within a safe, accepting environment.

We inspire students to interpret texts and media critically, respectfully and with maturity. Because our students experience and enjoy a diverse diet of literature, experiencing ambitious and challenging texts from a wide literary heritage, they arrive at a deeper appreciation of how texts work. Through yearly study of plays, poems, novels and non-fiction texts, we create stimulating lessons where students have the opportunity to respond analytically and creatively.Β  Our students engage in respectful debate with an increasing ability to listen and respond to others, encouraging them to develop and reconsider their opinions and mindsets. These building blocks in KS3 and KS4 foster an ability to form coherent and nuanced arguments with diverse evidential support if they choose to continue to study A Level English. We give students the grammatical tools and vocabulary to develop their own voice and to communicate clearly with a high level of accuracy. We provide an enriched curriculum with opportunities to explore English interests outside the classroom through a variety of clubs, theatre trips and Book Week, which includes many inspiring visiting authors.

The English curriculum extends beyond the classroom to equip our students for the world and encourages them to be tolerant, critical and empathetic. At the heart of what we do, we believe there is something magical about the shared experiences of stories that stay with our students beyond our classrooms.
